Tangkhul Welfare Society Mumbai (TWSM) was established to serve as a cultural and developmental anchor for the Tangkhul community living in Mumbai and surrounding regions. In a fast-paced urban environment, TWSM nurtures belonging, promotes well-being, and champions opportunities for progress without compromising traditional values.
Established by like-minded individuals who saw the need for a unified platform, TWSM is built on voluntary efforts to promote solidarity, support those in need, and uphold our values even far from home.
TWSM emerged from a collective desire to protect, uplift, and unify Tangkhuls across the city. Over the years, it has grown into a dynamic platform for social welfare, community building, and cultural celebration.

A Brief History of Tangkhul Welfare Society Mumbai
The Tangkhul Welfare Society Mumbai (TWSM) was officially established on July 15, 2012, following years of informal discussions among Tangkhul elders about forming a support system for the growing Tangkhul community in Mumbai. The turning point came in October 2011, when Mr. Sothing Shimrah convened the first elders’ meeting at Mr. K.T. Zimik’s residence, leading to the decision to organize a community picnic. At the Tangkhul Picnic at Gorai Beach on November 12, 2011, the community unanimously agreed to form a society.
TWSM was created with the vision of “Virtue and Liberty”, aiming to preserve and promote the cultural, social, and emotional well-being of Tangkhuls residing in Mumbai. It functions as a non-profit organization, offering support to individuals in need, fostering community spirit, and celebrating cultural heritage through events like Luira Phanit, Cultural Day, and various fundraising activities.
Over the years, TWSM has played a vital role in the lives of the Tangkhul diaspora in Mumbai—offering assistance during emergencies, facilitating cultural engagement, and representing the community in broader forums.
Through resilience, unity, and active member participation, TWSM has grown into a cornerstone institution for the Tangkhul community in Mumbai.
